Under the Constitution and the Salaries and Remuneration Act 1998, a Secretariat is established within the Parliamentary Service that is responsible for the Salaries and Remuneration Commission.
The primary role of the Secretariat is to provide technical advice to the Salaries & Remuneration Commission regarding the determination of salaries, allowances and benefits for public sector leaders and to carry out general administrative and secretarial duties pertaining to the Commission.
The technical advice provided by the Secretariat covers Parliamentarians, Chief Executive Officers of Public Funded Authorities, Departmental Heads, Provincial Administrators, Ministerial Staff and Members of Provincial Assemblies, Judges of the National Court including the Chief Justice and Deputy Chief Justice and Constitutional Office Holders.
The Secretariat reports directly to the Speaker and the Clerk of Parliament.
The Secretariat may perform and exercise any other functions conferred by the Speaker or the Clerk of Parliament consistent with the above.
