As the custodian of the Mace of the House; a symbol of Royal Authority and the authority of the House and Speaker, the Serjeant-at-Arms plays an important ceremonial role in Parliament.
It is the Serjeant-at-Arms who precedes the Speaker when he enters and leaves the Chamber at the beginning and end of a day's sitting.
The Serjeant-at-Arms also acts as the custodian of the Members' attendance register, allocates seats in the Chamber and keeps order during Sessions.
His protocol duties include assisting in organizing Members' travel arrangements for official duties abroad and ensuring members and other VIPs are accorded protocol services upon their arrival and departure at the airport.
The Serjeant-at-Arms also organizes and conducts excursions for those wanting to visit the Parliament House such as schools, churches and tourists.
